Living in view of Eternity

Kids are officially back to school. Our daughter starts 1st grade this year, and I have etched in my mind what she looked like on her first day of school. On Facebook I saw many 1st day of school pictures. Did you take any back to school pics? And what thought pops into our heads as kids go back to school? How about this, “I thought I had more time.” I thought I had more time with my daughter at home. I thought I had more time for summer break. Or I thought I had more time with them before the college years.
Time has a way of tricking us. We think we have more of it than we actually do. So let’s pause to consider what a short time we actually do have.
In the Bible it says, “For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by” (Psalm 90:4). I was doing some math, and this means that in God’s perspective our 80 or 70 years of life is like 2 hours. In other parts of the Bible it says that our lives are like a breath, or a shadow. We have mere moments on the earth.
So let’s say a doctor told you that you only had 2 hours to live. How would you use that time? Would the trip to Home Depot for your house project really be a big deal, would it really matter if you were wearing trendy clothing, or if you beat the video game, or if the Bears won? What would you spend your time doing?
Let me tell you how God would spend his time. He’d spend it in pursuit of us. I know this because that’s what Jesus’ life on earth was all about. He didn’t come to earth to live it up, to serve himself, and to get a lot of toys. He came for us. He made each moment count in order to save us. He was sinless, so that we through faith would be seen as sinless. He was punished, so we’d escape punishment. He rose, so we would know we too will rise and live not just for 70 or 80 years - but for eternity.
